Severe hangover treatment in Pattaya

A hangover is dehydration, disturbed sleep, low blood sugar, inflammation and irritated stomach lining all at once — which is why water alone rarely fixes it. Hangover treatment in Pattaya shortens a wasted day considerably, and the more useful part is checking it is only a hangover.

Why they are worse here

You start dehydrated. A day in this heat costs fluid before a drink is poured, so the same number of drinks leaves you further behind than at home.

Measures are generous and often unmeasured, buckets are shared, and local spirits are frequently stronger than the equivalent you are used to. Estimating intake is genuinely difficult.

Then the morning: sleeping badly in air conditioning, waking into thirty-two degrees, and having to be somewhere. The whole cycle compounds — see dehydration treatment.

What actually helps

Rehydration with salts rather than plain water, in small frequent amounts. Simple carbohydrates to correct blood sugar. Anti-inflammatory pain relief for the headache, taken with food.

Sleep, and cool air. Time is the honest answer for most of it.

What does not work: more alcohol, which postpones rather than treats; strong coffee, which dehydrates further; and most of what is sold as a hangover cure, which is expensive sugar water.

When a drip is worth it

When nothing stays down. If you are vomiting repeatedly, oral rehydration is not a slower option, it is not an option at all.

When you have somewhere to be — a flight, a boat, a booked day — and cannot spend it recovering. An IV drip with anti-sickness medication and pain relief given directly usually turns that around within an hour or two.

We will also say when it is not worth it. A mild hangover does not need a cannula, and you will be told that rather than sold one.

Paracetamol, and the one real caution

Paracetamol is generally fine at normal doses. What is not fine is exceeding the daily maximum, which is easy when you are taking it repeatedly across a bad day and losing track.

Combination cold-and-flu products, some painkillers and some anti-nausea remedies all contain paracetamol without saying so prominently, and stacking them is how people take far more than they realise.

Sustained heavy drinking plus regular paracetamol is harder on the liver than either alone. If you have been drinking heavily for days, mention it before dosing — see blood tests.

When it is not a hangover

Come in for any of these rather than waiting it out:

  • Vomiting past midday, or unable to keep any fluid down
  • Vomiting blood, or anything resembling coffee grounds
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially upper pain going through to the back
  • A fever, which a hangover does not cause
  • Confusion, or a headache that is much worse than usual
  • Chest pain or a racing, irregular heartbeat

Repeated retching can tear the lower oesophagus. Severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back can be pancreatitis. And a fever means an infection that the drinking is masking — see fever treatment.

Anxiety the day after

The dread and jitteriness that follow heavy drinking are a real physiological effect, not a character flaw — alcohol suppresses the nervous system and it rebounds the other way as levels fall.

It is worse with poor sleep, worse in the heat, and worse when you cannot remember parts of the night. It usually settles within a day.

If it does not, or if it is a pattern rather than an event, that is worth raising with somebody. It is a normal thing to mention here and it is not met with a lecture — see the walk-in clinic.

What not to do while hungover

Do not ride a scooter. Reaction time and judgement are still impaired hours after you feel legal, and this is the commonest way a night out becomes an injury — see motorbike accident injuries.

Do not dive. Dehydration is a recognised contributor to decompression illness and nausea at depth is genuinely dangerous — see dive medicals.

And do not spend the day in direct sun trying to sweat it out. That is the exact combination that produces heat exhaustion, and it accounts for a great many afternoon arrivals.

Drinking better, if you are going to

Eat properly beforehand, particularly something with fat and protein, which slows absorption.

Alternate alcoholic drinks with water rather than catching up at the end — the end is when you are least likely to do it. Be wary of shared buckets, where nobody knows the strength.

And rehydrate with salts before bed rather than in the morning. That single habit makes more difference than anything available the following day.

One local note worth knowing: some cheaper spirits sold here are not what the label says, and adulterated drink is an occasional cause of a hangover that is far worse than the amount consumed would explain — particularly one with visual disturbance, severe abdominal pain or breathlessness. That combination is not a hangover and should be seen rather than slept off.

Coming in

No appointment, at any hour, and no judgement. This is an extremely ordinary reason to walk into a clinic in this city and nobody will comment on it.

If getting here is the problem, a doctor can come to you — see doctor hotel visits. If several of you are in the same state, say so when you call; treating a group in one room is quicker and cheaper.

And if you are unsure whether it has crossed from hangover into something else, ring and describe it. That is free and it takes a minute — see alcohol poisoning for the signs that mean come now.

Frequently asked questions

Why are hangovers worse in Thailand?

You start dehydrated from the heat, measures are generous and unmeasured, and you wake into thirty-two degrees having slept badly.

Does water alone fix it?

Rarely. A hangover is dehydration plus low blood sugar, poor sleep, inflammation and stomach irritation. Salts, food and rest do more.

Is an IV drip worth it?

When nothing stays down, or when you have a flight or a booked day you cannot lose. For a mild hangover you will be told it is not needed.

Can I take paracetamol?

Yes at normal doses. Watch for combination cold remedies that also contain it — stacking them is how people exceed the maximum.

When is it not just a hangover?

Vomiting past midday, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain going through to the back, fever, confusion, or chest pain.

Why do I feel so anxious the next day?

A real rebound effect as alcohol leaves the nervous system, worse with poor sleep and heat. It usually settles within a day.

Can I ride a scooter once I feel better?

No. Reaction time and judgement stay impaired well after you feel legal, and this is the commonest way a night out becomes an injury.

Will anyone judge me for coming in?

No. It is an extremely ordinary reason to walk into a clinic in this city.

Why a clinic rather than a hospital

English-speaking doctors on site, 24 hours a day. It is worth being straight about what that is for. Pattaya is not short of hospitals, and for anything serious that is where you should be — we will send you and ring ahead. What a hospital handles badly is the small urgent thing at an awkward hour: a wound that needs cleaning properly, a stomach that has emptied itself since midnight, a certificate needed before a morning flight. Those mean a long wait behind real emergencies, at several times the price. That gap, at every hour of the day, is what this clinic is for.

Beyond Pattaya, Doctor Pattaya Takecare Medical Clinic belongs to the Takecare Clinic group, which operates across Chon Buri, Phuket and Krabi. The practical value of that is continuity: if your treatment carries on after you leave, the next clinic already holds your notes, and a referral is a phone call between colleagues rather than a stack of paperwork you have to carry yourself.

Coming in

Doctor Pattaya Takecare Medical Clinic is 24 hours, every day, and that is the building being open with a doctor in it rather than a phone line that answers. No appointment is needed at any point, and there is no hour at which turning up is inconvenient for us. Walk in, or reach us on +66 81 668 5557 or WhatsApp. If you would rather not move, ask for a doctor hotel visit and we will come to you.

If it turns out this needs more than a clinic, that same conversation is where the referral and hospital transfer gets arranged — we stabilise you first, ring the receiving department so you are expected, and organise the ambulance rather than leaving you to find one. In this city that is a short drive at any hour, which is exactly why coming in early costs you nothing.
