Scooter injuries are the commonest serious thing that happens to visitors in this city, by a wide margin. Unfamiliar bike, unfamiliar traffic, no helmet, and often flip-flops. Motorbike accident treatment in Pattaya covers the grazes and sprains here, and the honest referral when it is more than that.
What we treat here
The large majority of scooter injuries, which are unglamorous and painful rather than dangerous:
- Road rash — gravel-embedded grazes needing proper cleaning
- Cuts needing closure
- Exhaust burns on the calf
- Sprains of ankle, wrist and shoulder
- Bruising, and the assessment that it is only bruising
- Tetanus cover and infection prevention
Cleaning is most of the work. Grit left in a graze causes infection and permanent dark speckling of the skin, and that is far easier to prevent now than to correct later.
What goes straight to a hospital
Call 1669 rather than coming here for:
- Any loss of consciousness, even brief
- Head injury with vomiting, confusion or drowsiness
- A limb that looks bent, shortened or will not bear weight at all
- Severe chest or abdominal pain
- Bleeding that will not stop under firm pressure
- Numbness, weakness or a limb that has gone cold
- Any crash at speed, or any crash without a helmet

Head injury, and the next 24 hours
A helmet does not make a head injury impossible, and a knock that seemed minor at the roadside is the one to watch.
Go to hospital immediately for vomiting more than once, worsening headache, confusion, drowsiness or difficulty waking, a seizure, unequal pupils, weakness, repeated slurred speech, or clear fluid from the nose or ear.
Somebody should stay with you overnight after any head knock, and should wake you and check you make sense. If you are travelling alone and have hit your head, say so — it changes the advice, and sleeping it off alone in a hotel room is exactly the wrong plan.
Why these injuries infect here
Road surface grit, tropical heat, humidity, sweat, and the near-universal instinct to go back in the sea or the pool the next day.
A graze that would be trivial at home becomes cellulitis in three days here with surprising regularity, and the sea is the commonest single reason.

The licence problem, which will cost you more than the injury
This is the single most important thing on this page financially, and almost nobody knows it until afterwards.
Most travel insurance only covers motorcycle injuries if you held a licence valid for that motorcycle in your home country, and frequently only if you were wearing a helmet. Rental shops here do not check. An international driving permit without a motorcycle category does not count.

The other side of a Thai road accident
There is usually a police report, and often an on-the-spot negotiation about liability and compensation with the other party and the rental shop.
Do not agree to anything or sign anything while injured, shaken and unable to read it. Get treated first. A medical record from the day, describing what was found, is also what protects you if liability is disputed later.
Photograph the scene, the bikes and your injuries if you are able. Your insurer will want the police report, and getting one afterwards is considerably harder than at the time.
Fractures that are easy to miss
Scaphoid fractures in the wrist, from putting a hand out. Fifth metatarsal fractures in the foot. Rib fractures, which are diagnosed by examination as much as by film. Small wrist and finger fractures that get dismissed as sprains.
The pattern to watch for is pain that is not settling by day three, or a specific spot that is exquisitely tender to press. That is worth an x-ray rather than another week of assuming.

Riding here at all
Not a lecture, just the facts that change the odds. Helmets are the single biggest factor and are widely ignored. Flip-flops offer nothing; the foot and ankle take a great deal in a low-speed slide.

Coming in afterwards
Come the same day rather than the next morning, even if it seems minor. Cleaning is far more effective in the first hours, and the window for stitching is about twelve hours.
